Understanding Vault Lock Configurations
Indirect Drives - Some vault locks are direct drive. The dial spindle enters the lock case and attaches directly to the drive cam. Others use indirect drive, where the dial spindle attaches to a drive gear located outside the lock case. This gear drives two other gears in turn to transmit motion to the lock's drive cam. An indirect drive negates a punching attack. An indirect drive can be configured at the end of the lock case opposite the bolt, below the lock case, or at the top of the lock case. The drawings to the right illustrate the three indirect drive configurations.
Bolt Variations - Vault locks can be equipped with one of five different bolts. The three extension models are designed to attach directly to boltwork or a blocking bar. The standard square bolt is used to block moving boltwork. The roller bolt, seldom used today, opens to provide a path into the lock case into which a boltwork extension can move. The five models are illustrated to the right.
